Diphtheria: A Preventable Disease That Highlights the Importance of Vaccination

Diphtheria is caused by toxin-producing strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and spreads mainly through respiratory droplets or close contact with an infected person. Common features include a sore throat, fever, swollen glands, weakness, and the formation of a thick gray or white membrane in the throat that can make breathing and swallowing difficult. Severe cases may lead to complications such as myocarditis (heart inflammation), nerve damage, and airway obstruction. Treatment typically involves diphtheria antitoxin, appropriate antibiotics, supportive medical care, and isolation to prevent further spread. Public health measures, including contact tracing and vaccination of close contacts when recommended, also play an important role in controlling outbreaks.
